What can we say about GCHA Poker Ride 2009? WOW!!! It looked
as though everyone had a great time! We are already looking forward to next
year, making it bigger and if possible better! The ride was held at Pardee
with the group taking the west trail. The event brought in 63 enthusiastic
people with one third being club members, leaving a number of 40 non members
and they were all excited.
Check in was held from 8:30am to 10:00am allowing people to ride out at their
own time and pace. Club members were riding out at various times to help anyone
needing it. Four burlap bags filled with enveloped cards were hung from trees
22 minutes apart, riders had to step their trusty mounts up to the bags to
retrieve their cards not being allowed to open the envelopes. The total ride
took 3 hours. As riders arrived back to base they were greeted by the mouth
watering aroma of Mike Mole’s BBQing skill. WHAT A MAN!!! Jim and Sharon
Ingham made a huge pot of elk chili that beat out the great flavor of last
year’s chili. All of us who held down base while others rode were fortunate
enough to sample it while Jim and Sharon slaved over it. Thank you to both
of them for all of their hard work and food preparations!
Riders checked in with their 4 enveloped cards choosing their 5th card at
base. Envelopes were opened by Kathy Huebert and her adorable, giggly twin
Peggy Rocha. The excitement at the table grew as each envelope was opened
if it contained a possible winning hand. At one point during food serving
one non member was on her way to a straight, needing only a Jack at this point
everyone started chanting “Jack, Jack, Jack”. The enthusiasm grew
deafening when Kathy Huebert’s cards were opened revealing a three of
a kind in 10’s. Shortly after Jerry Valentine turned in his cards to
reveal the winning hand of 3 Ace’s(maybe with his winnings he can get
some reverse liposuction to add some meat to those legs of his, the chicken
legs that were served were bigger than his!!). Winning hand paid $100.00 going
to Jerry Valentine with Kathy Huebert taking $50.00 in second place.
The raffle began with the Big raffle prize of over $100.00 worth of horse
supplies donated by Kim Gerton going to a non member. Other very popular prizes
bringing in lots of raffle tickets were 2 free shoeings donated by Dustin
Finck(a non member), both won by Kimmy “Kooty” Gerton-a day on
the water fishing with Ron “Lighthouse” Wilson won by Jolene Storment(is
it true that fish don’t bite when there is a lot of noise? Could be
a day without a bite!!! Tee Hee Hee love ya Joleneie), and a very cute western
purse donated by Thanette Sherbondy won by Patty Hedlund but sneakily passed
on to Katherine Wilson(Patty you didn’t have to do that you sneaky little
cutie, I love ya! Thank you soooo much!!!)
The day was a complete success as several club members rode the ride one more
time at a much faster competitive pace to retrieve the card sacks. It sounded
like everyone had a great time. We can not thank you enough to EVERYONE who
helped out!!! Kathy Huebert and Peggy Rocha were there at 6:00am to help start
to finish. And to everyone else THANK YOU!, THANK YOU!, THANK YOU! EBMUD was
very accommodating as well-they bent over backwards for Ron to help make this
location perfect for us.
Thanks to All! Cowboy & Cowgirl Love----Ron & Katherine Wilson
